Today’s
emergency rooms are being used as a safety net for a healthcare system that
leaves tens of millions of Americans uninsured—and that net is about to
break. Because ERs are required to treat every patient who comes through the
door, people with nowhere else to turn are joining the critical-care crowd.
This ABC News program reports on America’s emergency room crisis, in which
many ERs, overwhelmed and losing money, are taking drastic actions to keep
their heads above water—including turning away those who cannot pay. (23
minutes)
