Waterborne: Gift of the Indian Canoe |
|
by Anne Rutledge
For thousands of years, Indian people have inhabited the Pacific Northwest.
Today, within what is now Washington State, reside 37 Indian Tribes
representing many different cultures, languages, and experiences. Told
totally by members of these tribes, the voices of Waterborne speak as one.
This video documents a great revival as hundreds of tribal members, young
and old, participate in the native art of canoe carving and rekindle the
excitement of the canoe race.Waterbornelinks the canoe with both past and
present, making the vital connection between canoe, water, fish, and cedar,
and shows the renewed determination of indian people to preserve their
beliefs, traditions, and natural resources while living fully as
contemporary people.
