The literary masterpiece of the Middle Ages, Dante
Alighieri's Divine Comedy, was an imaginary journey from Hell, through
Purgatory, to Paradise. The great poem is peppered with memories of his own
exile.
Learning Objectives:
1) To examine the life and times of the great Italian poet, Dante Alighieri.
2) To provide an introduction to The Divine Comedy by showing the influences
behind its creation.
3) To follow Dante's wanderings, from his exile from Florence in 1302, to
his death in Ravenna in 1321, thereby gaining basic knowledge of the Italian
countryside. (45 minutes)
