Spirituality and the Black Helping
Tradition in Social Work
by Elmer P. Martin and Joanne M. Martin
In the Black helping tradition, spirituality is the
sense of the sacred and divine, which gave Black people the strength to go on when faced
with threats to their self-worth, dignity, and even their existence. Taking primarily a
historical perspective, Spirituality illustrates how early Black caregivers and pioneering
social workers used spirituality in the struggle to achieve racial justice and gender
equality to create a truly democratic society, and examines how it can be used in social
work practice today.
