Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
Delbert Boone discusses Dr. Abraham Maslows theory that human beings are motivated
by unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher
needs can be satisfied. While discussing the details of Maslows theory, he ties it
to the pre-occupation of drug use and the negative effects which result from alcohol/drug
addiction. He says that since addiction is a progressive illness, it destroys a persons
ability to achieve self actualization, eventually destroying the persons ability to meet
their other needs including self-esteem, physiological, love, and safety.
