Despite its inscription, the A Major Cello Sonata is basically not a sad work. The irony for us is in the performance by Barenboim and his wife, the late Jacqueline du Pre. Hailed as the greatest cellist of this century, she contracted multiple sclerosis shortly after this performance was filmed. Beethoven had, by the time he wrote this sonata, apparently learned to deal with his deafness; Jacqueline du Pre never played again.
