Hunt for the USS Alligator: U.S. Navy's First Sub

Join the hunt for a lost piece of American Civil War history. Commissioned in 1862, the USS Alligator was the first military submarine put into service by the U.S. Navy. A bit of a novelty amidst the relatively low-tech ships of the 19th century, the submersible was designed to protect the Union's wooden-hulled blockade ships from the threat of the Confederacy's formidable Ironclads. However, while en route to assist in the capture of Charleston, North Carolina, the Alligator was lost in bad weather – less than a year after she had been commissioned.

Follow a team of top divers and recovery experts as they scour the coast of the Carolinas in search of the sub – and definitive answers to lingering questions of her fate.
