Alternatives to Violence:
Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, and Mediation
Children rely on what they see in life to determine how people treat each
other. With the escalation of violence in our society, developing
alternative models for teaching kids how to solve problems has become
critical. Part One: Students learn the value of problem solving and conflict
resolution as alternatives to fighting. Through dramatized sequences, skills
such as listening, oral expression, critical thinking, assertiveness, and
teamwork are taught. Part Two: Teachers, counselors, administrators, and
parents learn methods of employing conflict resolution skills in everyday
interactions in school and at home. Basic techniques for establishing peer
mediation programs are introduced. Ways to resolve youth-adult conflicts are
explored.
