This comprehensive volume represents the collective efforts of twenty five of the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) faculty as well as thirty seven guest authors. The impressive faculty represents a diverse group of HIV care providers. The guide is organized into six sections covering HIV and AIDS care and treatment of the child, adolescent, and adult. The text is targeted for the front-line clinician and is designed to allow for the rapid identification of practical treatment information. Recognizing that rapid changes occur in this field the reader is encouraged to consult with their local experts or research the literature for the most up to date information to assist in individual treatment decisions for their patient.
The success of antiretroviral therapy is resulting in not only an improved quality of life, but also an improved life expectancy for our patients. With these changes come new challenges. Clinicians are pressed to better manage the primary care needs of their patients. Complications of medication therapies need to be evaluated and treated, as do problems associated with the aging of our patients such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, etc. As more medications are required, closer observation is needed to prevent serious drug interactions.
The complexity of care required to manage our HIV patients requires not only attention to detail but also a commitment to remain up to date in this rapidly changing field of medicine. In this decade, great gratification is achieved witnessing the advancements made in medication therapy and the benefits to our patients.
