A second product made from sodium
chloride, sodium metal, is also produced at the chemical plant shown in
Chemicals from NaCl: 1. It is formed by electrolysis of a sodium chloride,
calcium chloride molten mixture, and is isolated at the cathode of the cell
as a liquid. This product is extremely reactive; it must be handled very
carefully and packaged in an inert oil, free from air and moisture. In
England, sodium metal has two principal uses: in the production of the fuel
additive tetraethyl lead from chloroethane (very little tetraethyl lead is
used in the U.S. because of EPA regulations regarding the use of lead-free
gasoline); the second major use of sodium metal is to displace titanium and
zirconium from their chlorides to produce the pure metals required for
high-technology aerospace applications. The program also demonstrates the
reactivity of fluorine. (20 minutes)
